Dr. Swagata Payra

Dr. Swagata Payra, is a faculty in Department of Physics at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra,. He has done PhD from Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT Delhi on “Fog Prediction using Numerical and Statistical Models” and its prediction skill was widely covered by Media like India Today, Hindustan Times etc.  He is M. Tech. in Atmospheric Sc. and Technology from IIT Kharagpur. He has done Post-Doc from CNRM, Meteo-France, France. Apart from that he was awarded young scientist by Max Planck Institute of Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany and studied there. He has also worked as a visiting scientist in University of California, Los Angeles(UCLA), USA. He has been also recognized in Who's Who by Marquis, USA. Dr Swagata has worked in several National and International projects related to weather and climate. Currently he is actively involved with Goddard Space Flight Centre(GSFC)NASA, USA, Space Application Centre(SAC),ISRO, Govt of India and Ministry of Earth Science(MoES), Govt of India's project. Recently he has successfully completed Department of Science and Technology (DST)’s project. He has a good number of papers in national and international journals and conferences related to aerosol study by using extensive observational and numerical modelling. Apart from that he has attended many seminars, conferences, brain storming sessions and symposium in and out of India. He has many scholarly achievements. To name a few: He is the recipient of the ‘national scholarship’ from University Grant Commission, Government of India for his result in graduation. He received scholarship(All India Rank – 64, GATE) from Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India while pursuing M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur. He secured 1st position in M.Tech with a CGPA of 8.42 while he was a 10 pointer (10/10) at IIT Delhi in his Pre-Ph D course work at Centre for Atmospheric Sciences.

About Me

Currently I am working as Assistant Professor at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, Jaipur Campus. I have joined BIT in Jan' 2008. My current area of research and teaching focuses on various aspect of aerosols, their optical properties along with the particle size distribution, satellite data, diagnostics and impacts of tropospheric aerosols over India with an emphasis on Northwestern India. Understanding of fog formation and prediction is one of my favourite subject. Apart from that, I also focus on climate change and impacts.
